Off Base Eats

There are a lot of great places to eat while you're in San Antonio.  Not only are you going to find every restaurant chain but you'll also be pleasantly surprised at the quality of food offered at the less known establishments.  In fact, the food here is so good that San Antonio was voted the second fattest city in the country.

In this section, we're only going to list the places near base that we recommend for a quick quality lunch.  In my opinion, I think it's important for pilots to make sure you are properly nourished before you fly.  And no, I am not saying this because my background is from flying C-17s where keeping my loadmasters fed was my number one priority.  Again, we rated them based on feedback from some of the PIT students on a scale of five.

Name

Location and Description

1.  Sushi-chi

Located on Pat Booker about 3 miles from the main gate.  I could eat here every day.  I wish they had a place like this outside of every DoD installation.  As the name implies, this establishment's main attraction is a sushi buffet that contains an incredible variety even for those who think that eating sushi involves consuming raw fish will enjoy (definitely not true).  Philly rolls, tempura rolls, you name it, they have it.  If this still won't convince you to eat sushi then never fear, they have a huge assortment of chinese (General Tso, Mongolian Beef, etc) and Korean food (Bulgogi, gyoza, kimchi, etc) included in the buffet.  Lunch hours are from 11AM-2PM and dinner hours are from 1730-2000.  Prices are very reasonable at $7.99 for lunch and $11.99 for dinner.

2.  The Pateo

Located on Pat Booker about 2 miles from the main gate.  Great tex-mex food with tortilla soups to die for.  Prices are very reasonable and they have a great selection off their lunch menu.  When you drive by it, the windows are tinted so it may look closed even though they're probably open.
