The Midphase is the first UPT checkride you will
ever take. The items on which you will be evaluated is really basic.
The point of this ride is make sure you will be
able to go to the area and back by yourself safely. If you pass this ride,
your next flight will consist of you going by yourself to the area to practice
the maneuvers. Specifically, the following list is what is required:
-
normal landing
-
no-flap landing
-
ELP
-
Straight-in
-
Power-on stalls
-
Traffic Pattern stalls
-
Spin
-
ELP stalls
-
Baby aerobatics (loop, aileron roll, split-s)
-
Departure to the MOA (military operating area)
-
Recovery from the area to the base
You will also be required to navigate without use of
the GPS or navaids (the policy for this is different depending on what base
you're at). Staying within the confines of the MOA using visual references
is pretty challenging to say the least when the visibility is subpar.
For grading, the midphase checkride is worth half of
an individual checkrides. I can only speak for Moody AFB, but the pass
rate for this evaluation was 50%. If you are safe during the sortie
without IP intervention, you will probably pass the ride. Watch the
boundaries (both vertical and lateral) while in the MOA and don't get slow when
landing. Whatever you do, do not tie the IP's hands by screwing up the
boldface or EP.
