First Day

Academics

Flight Line

Off Base

The academic period is pretty low key.  It lasts about 3 weeks and consists of 3 sections (2 if you're a transition student).  Most of the lessons are on CAIs (Computer Aided Instruction) with the review sessions in a classroom.  All the classroom sessions are taught by the LSI instructors.  The days are between 5 to 7 hours depending on how long it takes you to complete the CAIs.  You will also have a workbook with all the slides and review questions.  The whole point of this period is to expose you to the academic material the UPT student will learn.

T-6A Texan II CockpitThe three sections are:  Systems I, Systems II, and Aerodynamics (the latter is not required for transition students).  There is a 47 question CAI test at the end of each section.  The test questions are very basic so it's important to remember not to read too much into them.  The workbook and the review sessions are key to passing the test.  There are study sheets available on the Gouge section of this site for the tests.  If you have any new additions or corrections for the study sheets, then please send it to us.

Also, during the academic period, there will be an IRC and a life support class.  The IRC test will not be taken after the class.  Instead, you will need to take it before your transition check at DOV on your own time.  For the most recent IRC question bank, click here.  You will need to be on a .mil server to access this.  The life support class will cover hanging harness and emergency ground egress training.  This class will be a good opportunity for you to learn how to strap into the T-6.

T-6A Texan II SimulatorAcademics is probably the best time to get familiar with the checklist and the aircraft.  At PIT, most of the simulators are open at the end of the day, and since you'll get off at approximately 1400 from class, take advantage of the sims.  The more you do now, the easier it will be for you when you hit the flight line.   There are three types of sims;  OFTs, IFTs, and UTDs.  The differences between the three are the visuals.  The OFT has approximately a 300 degree visual screen while the IFT has a flat screen in front.  The UTD does not have any visuals.  Check out the simulator photos in the "Pictures" section of this website.
